How to Reset KODI on FireStick / Fire TV (Step-by-Step Guide 2024)

KODI (formerly known as XBMC) is an open-source media center application, similar to the Apple TV. It’s a great way to organize your TV shows, movies, music & more. The only problem is that you need to manually reinstall the software every time you get a new device or computer. And, if you ask me, it’s just not worth it.

FireStick and FireTV is not that easy to get working again, if you have manage to have a problem with it. There may be a lot of tutorials on the internet that do not help you to find a solution, this post will guide you step by step.

In this article, you will learn how to reset Kodi 18.9 Leia or Kodi 17.6 Krypton on the FireStick. Kodi is a great multimedia tool that turns your device into a media center and allows you to stream your favorite content – free and paid (mostly free, of course). But this free and open source platform is not without its problems. Long-time users who have multiple Kodi add-ons installed experience performance issues more often than they would like.

There are several hacks and solutions that can help speed up Kodi and fix bugs that reduce performance. But sometimes none of these solutions work and resetting Kodi to factory settings is the only viable option. If you reset the application, you can start over as if you were using Kodi for the first time. However, keep in mind that this will also result in the loss of all Kodi data, such as. B. of your addons and settings means. This too can be taken into account, but to a certain extent.

This article is also for those who just want to use Kodi from the beginning without going through the process of uninstalling and reinstalling the application. For example, if you’ve installed too many add-ons and builds over time and don’t use most of them anymore, instead of uninstalling them one by one, you can clean up Kodi with a quick reset and install a handful of add-ons you do want to use.

Rebooting Kodi on a FireStick

In the following sections of this article, you will learn how to reset Kodi on the FireStick, how to back up and restore your data, and anything else you need to know. Read on!

Attention FireStick users!

Governments and ISPs are constantly monitoring your online activities, and accessing copyrighted content on your Fire TV Stick can cause serious problems. Your IP is currently visible to everyone. I highly recommend you to buy the best FireStick VPN to hide your IP address and transfer your favorite games safely.

Personally, I use ExpressVPN, the fastest and most secure VPN on the market. Not only is it easy to install on any device, but it also comes with a risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee. And if you are not 100% satisfied, you can always get your money back. ExpressVPN is also currently offering an additional 3 months free for an annual plan!

Here are the reasons why using a VPN is essential at all times.

STEP 1 – Backing up Kodi to a FireStick

If you’ve been using Kodi on the FireStick for a while, you may have already installed some add-ons and builds and adjusted some settings. If you reset Kodi on the FireStick, you will lose all Kodi data, including all add-ons and settings. Putting everything back in place can be a real headache. Not only does it take time, but you may not remember your previous settings.

If you just want to start from scratch, you don’t have to do much. Restart Kodi and you’re good to go. However, if you want to restore Kodi to its previous state, I recommend you make a backup before you reset it.

Message: There are several add-ons you can use to backup and restore Kodi. None of them offer reliable backup solutions. For some reason, add-ons only recover a portion of the backup data when restoring. However, it is better to get something back than to lose everything.

Before you reset Kodi, I recommend writing down everything you want to restore, so you can set it up manually later in case it doesn’t restore everything automatically.

When it comes to backing up your Kodi data, we think the Ares Wizard is the most efficient. It restores most backup data and is easy to install and use. Learn how to install Ares Wizard on Kodi here.

If you have the Ares Wizard, you can back up your Kodi data as follows.

#1. On the Kodi home screen, go to Add-ons > Software Add-ons and open Ares Wizard.

#2. Now select the Backup tab at the top of the Ares Wizard interface and click on it

#3. If you have not yet chosen a destination folder in which to save the backup file, or if you want to change it, click Select Destination in the Backup panel in the left column.

#4. In the Ares Wizard settings window that appears on the left, select Backup

#5. Now click on Backup Destination Folder to select the folder where you want to backup your Kodi data.

#6. Open the Root File System

#7. Press “sdcard.

#8. You can now select a folder on the FireStick where you want to store your Kodi backup data. The FireStick already has a Backups folder, so that’s where I keep my backup files. However, you can select any existing folder or create a new one by clicking the New Folder button on the right.

#9. I created a kodi folder in the backups. The Kodi backup folder is not present by default.

#10. Now open the kodi folder you just created in the Backups folder (you won’t see anything in this folder because we haven’t backed up Kodi yet) and click OK to select it.

#11. You now have a new destination folder for the backup. Click OK when you return to the settings window of the Ares Wizard.

#12. When you return to the Ares Wizard interface, you should see the Refresh option in the Backup section (this is because you selected a new destination folder). Click on the Refresh button.

#13. Ares Wizard has been updated with a new backup target. As you can see in the image below, you can choose which Kodi data you want to backup or not. If you want to back up everything, select Full System Backup. If you only want to save your add-ons, select Add-ons and leave the other boxes unchecked. When you have made your selection, click Make Backup.

#14. You will be asked if you want to ignore or save your packages.

Each time you update a plug-in or install a new one, the package is also loaded. After the upgrade or installation, you no longer need the packages and they continue to take up space in the FireStick’s limited memory. Always click Yes to ignore packages because you no longer need them.

#15. The Ares wizard will start backing up Kodi. This is what progress will look like.

#16. When Kodi is backed up, a pop-up window will appear asking if you want to see the missed files. Click No to continue (or select Yes if you really want to see the missing files). And don’t forget to ignore the total size of the missing files that this tooltip indicates. As you can see, the number is wrong (36722318 MB equals 36722 GB, which is almost 4600 times the maximum size of your FireStick’s 8 GB). This is clearly a problem.

In the next section you will learn how to restart Kodi. In the next section we will see how you can restore it.

STEP 2 – Reset Kodi on the FireStick

There are two ways to reset Kodi. The first option is to delete the data from Kodi without uninstalling. Another option is to remove the application from the FireStick and erase all associated data. We will examine the two possibilities in turn.

This is what Kodi looks like with all add-ons installed before the reset.

Method 1: Delete Kodi data

We will now learn how to delete data in Kodi. This method is simpler and almost effortless as it does not require uninstalling Kodi, which is an extra step. If you delete your data, Kodi will remain on your FireStick, but all add-ons and their settings, custom settings, Kodi settings and everything else will be deleted. So if you want to know how to reset Kodi, just delete the data. I’ll show you how.

#1. Using the remote, select Settings from the top menu of the FireStick home screen.

#2. Now go to the application menu and open it by pressing the Select button on the remote.

#3. Open Manage installed applications.

#4. You should now see a list of all the applications installed on your FireStick. Scroll down and select Kodi here, then press Select on the remote to access the available options.

#5. On the next screen, tap the Clear data option. On the right, you can also see additional information about Kodi on your FireStick, including how much memory it uses. In the image below, the Kodi application itself takes up 164 MB of memory and the associated data 125 MB.

#6. On the next screen, press Clear Data again to confirm your action.

#7. Press the Back button on the remote control once to return to the previous menu. On the right side you will see that the Kodi data has been removed.

#8. Return to the Home screen and access your applications and games. Start Kodi from there. The Prepare for First Run message appears, as shown below. This means that all Kodi data has been deleted and you have reset Kodi to factory settings.

#9. If you go to the Add-ons section from the Kodi home screen, you will see that all your add-ons have also been removed. Kodi works like new now.

In this section, we learned how to restart Kodi on the FireStick by deleting the data. In the following method, we will see how to remove Kodi from the FireStick.

Method 2: Uninstalling Kodi on a FireStick

Of course, another way to restart Kodi on the FireStick is to uninstall it completely and then reinstall it. It’s a longer process, but it gives the same results. Sometimes uninstalling and reinstalling can solve problems that a data cleanup cannot.

Let’s see how to uninstall Kodi on the FireStick.

#1. As with the first method, select Settings from the FireStick home screen and click Applications from the menu. Now click on Manage Installed Applications and select Kodi from the list.

#2. You will then see the following menu. This time, click Delete.

#3. On the next screen, press Delete again to confirm your action.

This will remove Kodi from the FireStick device. After reinstalling Kodi, all data will be deleted.

STEP 3 – Restore Kodi backup with Ares Wizard

Now that you have restarted Kodi, you need to restore the backup you made in step 1. Since you have backed up your data with the Ares Wizard, you will need the Ares Wizard again to restore the data.

The reset will remove all your add-ons, including Ares Wizard. So it needs to be reinstalled.

You can read this to install Ares Wizard on Kodi.

#1. After installation, launch the application, select the Backup tab at the top and click the Select Backup File option in the Restore section, as shown below.

#2. Select the Restore option from the Ares Wizard settings in the left menu bar.

#3. Now click on Backup File on the right.

#4. Now open the root filesystem and go to the folder where you previously backed up your Kodi data. In my case, it would be root filesystem > sdcard > backups > kodi.

Click the backup file from which you want to restore the data.

#5. Then press OK to continue

#6. Now click on REFRESH in the Restore section on the right.

#7. Click on the Restore Backup button below

#8. If you have changed the settings since you reinstalled Kodi and want to save them, select the options you want in the next window and click Next. If none of the options are selected, your current settings may be overridden.

#9. When your Kodi data has been recovered, you will see a confirmation of completed recovery. Press OK to continue.

#10. In order for the guisettings.xml file to be applied correctly, Kodi must be forcibly shut down. To do so, press OK. This will take you back to the FireStick interface, from where you can restart Kodi.

#11. Return to the Kodi home screen. As you can see, not all add-ons have been restored. This confirms what I said earlier – the data is only partially backed up. Unfortunately, that’s the best we can do. But it will still save you time and effort because you won’t have to configure Kodi from scratch.

What to do if add-ons or assemblies are missing

Like I said, the Ares wizard restores the data, but it may not be all the data you had before you reset Kodi. So if you miss some add-ons or builds that you need again, you can always reinstall them. You can use the following resource links to add add-ons, builds and applications.
